Happy as a sand-boy

It hadn't been forecast but we had more torrential rain again this morning. The dumper was back on site for shifting concrete and moving subsoil. The first task of the day was to excavate a trench to take a water pipe down to mains ready for a trench inspection by Wessex Water later in the day but the main task was infilling the block walls of the foundation.

When Mark, Elsa and I got back from our walk it was already raining and there was a load of coarse cement on the drive. Our neighbour Tom was also on site having been lured here by the scent of the concrete. Water was pouring from the bungalow downpipe into the foundations. Steve didn't want to pump it out because the water would go into the trench in which he was laying the water pipe. Tom went away again and returned with another sort of pump with a wide bore hose attached which they used to pump the water away from the trench. Tom'd also got his working boots on and stayed to play. Mark went out to help with the barrowing of the concrete into the foundations. Steve had hoped to be able to use the excavator and dumper truck for most of the infill work but the soft going scuppered that plan. Having done his share of barrowing Tom was allowed to operate the excavator. He was as happy as a sand-boy! By 1pm'ish the task was complete.
The guy from Wessex Water came by and inspected the trench around midday. It passed muster and a job will be raised to connect the pipe to the mains. The trench has been filled in but the main left exposed.

The rest of the day was taken up with backfilling the foundation trenches and generally tidying up in preparation for the delivery of the beams for the block and beam floor.
By late afternoon the site was bathed in glorious sunshine!
