Shedding some light

One of the tasks needing completion before the staircase can go in was the installation of a clerestory window in the stud wall between the stairwell and the keeping room (a secondary living room that connects to the kitchen area). Mark has now fixed an oak and leaded glass window, reclaimed from the same Victorian shirt factory as the two panels used as doors to the upstairs toilet and water tank, into place. He used modern oak to make the surround. The window oak was given 3 coats of Danish oil previously. The surround will be oiled later (when we have finished generating lots of dust!).

The window has been put in to allow evening light to penetrate into the centre of the house. Another window in the same style but slightly smaller will be installed between the kitchen and shower room to give borrowed light to the shower room and make it seem more like a room than a cupboard.
