We have spent many, MANY hours over the past 18 months or so deliberating over what to do for the staircase. Modular and adjustable, or second hand, or order from an online stair builder and install it ourselves, or build our own, or get someone else to make it and install it ourselves, or get someone else to make and install it...
Finally we have made a decision. We discovered a joinery company who make staircases a few minutes away from us in Hyde. They have just won a big contract on the Poundbury development and are going to be very busy but they have agreed to make a staircase for us when their schedule allows. They won't be able to install it for us but have recommended someone who can.
We are going to have a double winder staircase with bottom bullnose tread, solid beech treads, ply faced beech risers, pine engineered stair strings, pine engineered newels 90mm x 90mm, pine 32mm stop chamfered spindles, pine baserail with 32mm groove, beech handrail (bespoke) 32mm groove.
We would have liked to have had all beech but the length needed for the strings would be require a special order from the sawmill and their minimum order is about 3 times as much as we need which would make it prohibitively expensive for us. We will have beech treads and paint the pine.
