Needle in a haystack

There is lots of information out there regarding using a baling needle and twine to customize bales so I was surprised to find that it isn't possible to simply buy one. You have to get one custom made.

Our neighbour Peter said he'd have a go at making one for us. In fact he made us a couple, one according to a design I found in a book on straw bale building (shown in the photographs) and another of his own design. The latter was a much beefier model. Not unexpected from someone who worked in ADTU! Both needles worked fine.

The guys used the thinner one but only, I think, because that was the one they picked up first.

This needle has two notches to hook the twine into. One notch is for pushing and the other for pulling twine through a bale.
