Clean slate

Concurrently with the putting up of dry lining we have been laying a slate tile floor in the shower room.

A decoupling mat was stuck to the floor and 20mm thick Brazilian slate tiles were laid on top of it. The purpose of the mat is to prevent cracking as a result of any movement in the screed. We chose 20mm tiles to minimise the height difference with the beech flooring outside of the shower room.

Prior to laying the tiles I gave them a coat of sealant to prevent them from being stained by the adhesive. Mark used an angle grinder with a diamond blade for any cutting that was required. While he was cutting a tile I kept it wet by spraying it with water which helped to keep the dust down.

After the tiles were laid they were given another coat of sealant prior to grouting. We used a 3mm spacing between the tiles. With hindsight a slightly larger spacing would have made the task of grouting a whole lot easier.

Once the grouting was dry the tiles were cleaned up and a final coat of sealant applied. Sealing the tiles before applying grout made cleaning up really easy.
