Once and future roost

The roof of the grungelow is the site of a bat roost. The roost has been unoccupied during the time we have been here although we regularly see bats in the area during the summer months. Not only are bats protected but so are their roosts, whether or not they are occupied. It is a planning condition that we must provide a bat box in mitigation for the site we will be destrying.
Whilst the scaffold tower was up to do the rendering we took the opportunity to fix a box to the western gable end. When we unpacked the box we found that the fixings were missing. I bought the box some time ago so it was too late to complain. We had to work out a solution to firmly secure the box with minimal damage to the K-Rend coating on the verge.

Mark enlarge the original fixing hole and attached a stainless steel escutcheon key plate to the back of the box.

A stainless steel screw was drilled through the K-Rend into the upper verge sprocket.

The box was hooked onto this screw and two further screws were drilled through the landing board into the sprocket to secure the box firmly in place.
