We share the grungelow with a quarrel of sparrows. The sparrows will be made homeless when the grungelow is demolished so I bought a sparrow terrace nesting box to hang on the east facing exterior wall of the strawbale for them.
The ideal time to put up boxes is in the autumn. Unfortunately we didn't get the wall rendered and painted in time to do that.
Recently the sparrows have been showing interest in the bat box that was put up last year so I was keen to put up their terrace as soon as possible. Our friend Lew says that there are at least 5 pairs of sparrows living in the grungelow roof. One terrace won't be enough to house them all. I bought a second one but I had to get one of a different design as the original model is no longer made. I think though that a little variation is not a bad thing.
Last week when there was a break in the weather I applied a couple of coats of paint to one area and Mark hung the boxes. Now if the sparrows should take up residence in the next few weeks we won't have to get too close to the boxes when we come to paint. I hope that our efforts meet with the sparrows' approval - I should hate for them the quarrel with us.
