We have the power

Our intention had been to install solar PV panels when the build was complete (to ensure we didn't run out of money to finish the build). With the build taking longer than expected (now entering its 4th year) and the Feed in tariff (FIT) scheme ending this month we have had to change our plans. The FIT is substantially less now than when the scheme started. Even though the tariff is low it does contribute to the time it takes to cover the cost of installation. Although we were very keen on having the PV panels without the FIT it would not have been cost effective and we would not have installed them.

The brackets for the rails to which the panels were to be fixed were put on by the roofer when he tiled the roof. Last month the rails were put up and 30 PV panels were installed by H2ECO.

Because our array has a generation capacity of more than 3.68kW we had to apply for permission to install them from our Distribution Network Operator. This is required to ensure that our equipment does not have a negative impact upon the network.

The electricity generated feeds into our consumer unit via two inverters (which convert DC to AC) and if we don't use it, it gets passed on to the grid. We will receive circa 6p for each kW of electricity we generate plus we save money by not being charged for the electricity we use that is generated by the panels and not fed into the grid.

We have put in our application to join the FIT scheme. As the scheme is coming to an end they have been inundated with applications so it could be some time before we receive a response. The date of joining will however be backdated to the date our application was received.
Fingers crossed that the budget holds out otherwise the build will drag on even longer!
